Social Engineering – Scraping Data from Linkedin

Foundation:

I was performing a relatively unique task for a social engineering engagement for a client. Normally I’ll just receive a list of email accounts and/or phone numbers of specific users the client wishes to test. In this case they didn’t want to provide ANY information at all. They wanted to see what I would be able to find and then target those users.

I started with the usual google searches looking for pertinent data and found a little. Used metagoofil and theHarvester as well, which turned up about 20 valid accounts. During my googling I found a very interesting portal page that allowed users to reset their domain passwords. I wasn’t interested in brute forcing any accounts (yet), but was able to use the functionality to test for valid accounts. I browsed to a webpage detailing some of the executives at the company and tried varying combinations of their names to find the format they used to create accounts. It turned out to be first initial last name, not surprisingly.

I then turned my attention to Linkedin and found over 1800 existing employees. If I could just grab all the names of employees and then format them I could then fire this list of usernames at the portal page to get a large list of valid user accounts. How best to do this?

Unfortunately Linkedin is one of the worst designed websites for automating this. If I were able to change the number of results per page I could simply do this manually and it wouldn’t take long. For example if I could return 100 results per page that would only be 18 pages to save manually and then grep out the profile names. That wouldn’t be so bad to save 18 pages manually. Unfortunately Linkedin has it hardcoded that you can only view 10 results per page. It looks like the limit might be 25 results for the Linkedin API, but the actual website appears to be limited to 10 per page. That means I’d have to browse to and save 180 pages manually, too much work. Thus trying to automate it with a script to crawl through each page, saving the output, looked like the best option.

To do this I used the intruder module of Burp Suite. I also needed a paid account for Linkedin, otherwise you would just see their first name and last initial. I borrowed an account (legitimately) from a friend and logged into Linkedin. This captured the request using the proxy intercept feature. I found the request for the search results page in history, right clicked and chose ‘send to intruder’.

On the positions tab for intruder you can see the HTTP request from the client. There are many variables as part of this GET request so the first step is to remove all of them with the ‘Clear §’ button. This removes all the variables that intruder will manipulate. Next select the page_num variable and select the ‘Add §’button.

Note that I changed the variable Keyword=ORG_NAME to protect the client, in reality it was just the organizations name. The attack type doesn’t necessarily matter for this test because we’re only manipulating a single variable, for the difference between the attack types check out the portswigger website.

Now select the payloads tab and choose numbers in the payload set dropdown. This section is pretty self explanatory. We want the page numbers to walk through every number from 1 to 180 and the step defines how much it increments each time. Once you’re ready click Intruder -> Start Attack.

Once the attack has completed you can highlight all the requests, right click and choose ‘save selected items’. Choose a folder and all the contents of the requests will be saved in one file. This works perfectly for what we’re trying to do as we can simply grep out the first and last name.

There were a few locations in the html file that had the persons first and last name. The one that seemed like it would be the easiest to manipulate were part of a link that looked like this.

Because there was an even amount of items I simply pasted each of these files manually into an excel spreadsheet, saved the spreadsheet as a csv and then I could manipulate them as needed. In this case I simply did a search and replace on the comma to replace with nothing and voila, 485 account names to test in a perfect newline delimited file.

This took the data in the USERNAME.post file, sent the request to the password reset page and saved the output as USERNAME.response. Thus I could then grep for a string that indicated a correct login in all of the .response files and grep would give me the name of the user that was valid as part of the file name. I did this in part because the username was not spit back at the user in the html of the page.

When this was all complete I had 110 valid domain usernames! Not bad for a start. I then wanted to remove those legitimate names from the larger list so that I could target the valid credentials differently than the potentially valid account names.

A Professional Social Media Road Map for Small Business Marketing

Every Small Business needs to have an online marketing strategy that supports their offline presence. Here's a simple social media strategy that every small business can utilize to help grow their business.

Social Media Presence - If you haven't already done so, take some time and properly implement a social media strategy for your company. If your not talking about your company online, via social media, chances are someone else is. Make sure you control the story. There are many tools to help monitor what people are saying about you or your company. You can monitor what people are saying about your company's brand, services and products by subscribing to free online monitoring services like Hootsuite, Google Alerts and Twilert. These same services are a great way to stay informed about your competition.

All these services allow you to target your results by keywords, company names or general terms that help define your query. So once you realize that people are talking about your company or your competition, you'll want to participate in the conversation so that you can help steer the conversation in the right direction. The following social media platforms are a must for every small business owner to participate in.

Twitter: Twitter just might be the greatest online marketing tool your company can have, and its free! Take a look at this video clip by TechCrunch which interviews UCF's Dana White. Take a look at this info graphic by KissMetrics. There are over 1 billion tweets posted per week. As a Small Business owner, you have a particular expertise in a certain area. Its important for you to create a twitter account and talk about the things that can help other people. Things you can and should write about are topics related to the services and products your company offers. Always write with a flare for giving advice freely. In addition, ask your customers to follow you on Twitter. Use the platform as a way for communicating special offers and deals relating to your business.

Starbucks has a great social media success story that every small business can benefit from. The Next Web did a recent story on their social media strategy here. The great thing about twitter is that people will find and follow you if you have something to say. It also allows you to follow what are people are saying. Go to twitter and sign up for a free account. They recently launched brand pages which is similar to Facebook Pages for business. It allows you to set up a brand page for your business. Don't worry about "writers block". The cool thing about Twitter is that you can re tweet other peoples tweets. Make sure you follow people that have similar services and products and don't be afraid to share or re tweet their stories. Follow these Twitter steps:

1.Sign up - Reserve your name before someone else does.

2.Upload your logo: Spend a few dollars and hire a graphic design company to really make your Twitter page pop. I personally recommend Gamby Studios.

3.Link your Twitter account to your website, business cards and brochures.

4.Follow Industry Leading people that have similar interests to you.

5.Tweet: make sure to tweet or re tweet relevant information.

6.Down load a Twitter Application on your Cell Phone. I suggest Tweetcaster or Hootsuite.

7.Check out TwitHawk: A great way to send direct tweets to people who are talking about your industry, services or products.... in real time! Its kinda like Google AdWords but for Twitter. Its a great advertising platform that allows you to send direct messages to people that need or talk about your product.

8.Check out 48ers too. Free service that allows you to send direct messages back to people ( in real time). Set up keywords to track and let the application do the rest. It will show you real time results in both Facebook and Twitter. Great way to market your company in real time but just make sure you have time to manage this properly.

LinkedIn: According to several leading social media sites, LinkedIn is fast becoming the most popular "sharing" button on both business and personal websites. With over 100 million users, I rank LinkedIn as the second best social media marketing tool for small businesses. ( Yes, even better than Facebook ). A properly set profile allows users to opt in for business venture requests from other users. If your company is a b2b service then LinkedIn is the place. This is not a viral marketing strategy. Most people are professional decision makers that can be targeted based on their set profiles. My advise would be to pay for a premium service plan. Check out the ad platform and run a few targeted campaigns.

Facebook: The 10,000 pound gorilla is my 3rd pick for social media marketing. No other site with the exception of maybe StumbleUpon and Reddit gets more page views on a daily basis. By now, if your reading this you already have a Facebook account. Now take the next step and create your Brand Page. Every business is slowly but surely creating a Facebook Page and you should too. Once your page is up and running head over to Wildfire Promotion Builder for contests, coupons, group deals, and sweepstakes. Its a great way for you to have your own personal Groupon. Wildfire also has great tool for Brand Pages Design.

Google+: Google+ pages are just starting to create some buzz. Not fully released to the public but soon every business will be able to create their own page for their business. Here's what you need to know:

1.Get Started Early: Don't wait. Although not as popular as Facebook pages, Google+ pages will be very beneficial to your business in the long run.

2.Call to Action for customers: make sure you get your visitors to join one of your "circles" Keep them updated on interested products and services and invite them to "hangout".

3.Don't Confuse: Unlike Facebook, Google+ allows you to create multiple pages for your brands and products. Just be careful not to go overboard. Simple is better.

4.Website+1 button: make sure you have one on your website so people can share your website with other Google+ friends. Google also measures the relevancy of your website by several factors which now include how many people use the Google+ button on your website.

5.Use a Google+ URL shortener: The URL Google gives you for the brand page is very long and not good for marketing. Several companies offer a service where they can assign your Google+ URL a better and shorter string.

6.Its not FACEBOOK: Google+ users are a little different than most other social media users. The platform tend to attract a much more tech savvy user. Make sure your comments and content is relevant to your business and don't deviate into babble diatribe.

Note: Facebook will be releasing a new "Coupon" application, currently in Beta. Should be a great way for businesses to start offering coupon deals similar to Groupon but much more effective and much cheaper.

Company Blog: I personally suggest Tumblr. Its a free service with great templates to choose from. Posting articles in Tumblr can automatically be sent to your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts. Blogs have much higher relevance to search engines and can be a huge boost to Search Engine Optimization for your website. make sure your articles are well written and unique in content. Don't steal or scrape information from other sources. ( Search Engines like Google can quickly figure out that your information has been stolen. They wont index your site if they find this out. ) Take time to write good content or hire a company to do this for you. There are plenty of services out there that provide copy writing as a fee. Feel free to have one blog or many blogs but just make sure you update on a continuous basis and be the expert in your field. make your content so good that people will want to share your information with other friends and people.

YouTube: Create your own YouTube channel. Try creating something unique. If people like your video, they share it with potentially hundreds or thousands of people and pretty soon you have a viral campaign. YouTube now has a video ad platform. Online media marketing is big business. Spend some money and create a company video that explains your business and services. Its a great way for people to learn more about you without reading boring text on a website.

Collecting Data With Web Scrapers

There is a large amount of data available only through websites. However, as many people have found out, trying to copy data into a usable database or spreadsheet directly out of a website can be a tiring process. Data entry from internet sources can quickly become cost prohibitive as the required hours add up. Clearly, an automated method for collating information from HTML-based sites can offer huge management cost savings.

Web scrapers are programs that are able to aggregate information from the internet. They are capable of navigating the web, assessing the contents of a site, and then pulling data points and placing them into a structured, working database or spreadsheet. Many companies and services will use programs to web scrape, such as comparing prices, performing online research, or tracking changes to online content.

Let's take a look at how web scrapers can aid data collection and management for a variety of purposes.

Improving On Manual Entry Methods

Using a computer's copy and paste function or simply typing text from a site is extremely inefficient and costly. Web scrapers are able to navigate through a series of websites, make decisions on what is important data, and then copy the info into a structured database, spreadsheet, or other program. Software packages include the ability to record macros by having a user perform a routine once and then have the computer remember and automate those actions. Every user can effectively act as their own programmer to expand the capabilities to process websites. These applications can also interface with databases in order to automatically manage information as it is pulled from a website.

Aggregating Information

There are a number of instances where material stored in websites can be manipulated and stored. For example, a clothing company that is looking to bring their line of apparel to retailers can go online for the contact information of retailers in their area and then present that information to sales personnel to generate leads. Many businesses can perform market research on prices and product availability by analyzing online catalogues.

Data Management

Managing figures and numbers is best done through spreadsheets and databases; however, information on a website formatted with HTML is not readily accessible for such purposes. While websites are excellent for displaying facts and figures, they fall short when they need to be analyzed, sorted, or otherwise manipulated. Ultimately, web scrapers are able to take the output that is intended for display to a person and change it to numbers that can be used by a computer. Furthermore, by automating this process with software applications and macros, entry costs are severely reduced.

This type of data management is also effective at merging different information sources. If a company were to purchase research or statistical information, it could be scraped in order to format the information into a database. This is also highly effective at taking a legacy system's contents and incorporating them into today's systems.

Overall, a web scraper is a cost effective user tool for data manipulation and management.

Corporate Website Development Marketing Tips

Corporate website development is much more than just creating your website and putting it online. When developing your site you must consider marketing as a foundation to the development of your online presence. Businesses who fail to approach development from a marketing mind often find themselves dissatisfied with results of their site.

Corporate Marketing Tips

These are a few things to consider when developing your site that you want to make sure you communicate with your developer. Remember, often times people who develop or build websites are good at the technical aspect of the process but have minimal knowledge as to the successful marketing implementation.

1.Prominent and focused call to action - this is the process of leading your visitor down a path that is predefined by you. Most websites fail to guide the visitor down a specific path, which results in a site that does not perform as it should. An example of this could be a video that invites the visitor to put in their information to receive something of value. Additionally, it could be as simple as direct verticals that is has clear navigation and specific action.

2.Social media integration - the online world has drastically changed with social media being a driving force effecting the way we communicate and validate as a culture. This corporate website development marketing tip is critical if you want to engage your visitor. Social media integration can drastically increase your marketing results as other people share and approve of your content.

3.Blog Integration - this is a must for any new corporate development. This concept is foreign to most businesses as they don't understand the value in having a blog integrated on their corporate site. There are many reasons why a blog should be included. A few main reasons include, adding value to the visitor, giving people a reason to come back to your site, creating relevance in the search engine and increasing website authority.

4.Niche Keyword Research - this is a major downfall of most online development companies. They are able to make a nice looking site, however, they fail to understand the importance of developing the corporate website around the keyword research. Think of keyword research as the foundation, just as if you were to build a sky scraper, the strength of that structure begins with laying the proper foundation.

These are just a few of the important marketing tips to consider when developing your corporate website. Focusing on these will position your site ahead of those in your market who don't understand successful online asset development.

Promoting Your Website Through Writing Articles

One of the most popular methods of helping your website is through the writing of articles and then publishing them on websites / ezines who allow articles to be submitted. There are several things to bear in mind for the successful use of articles.

1. For articles to have the best effect they should not be duplicated on your site. If you submit articles already on your site, you will lose the unique content from your site. Unfortunately this approach does mean hard work. If you write a good article it seems a shame not to have it your own site as well. One approach I would suggest is that if you wanted to promote "yoga exercises" I would first create good pages and articles about "yoga exercises". I would put these on my own site. (Before promoting a site you should make sure there is something worthwhile promoting). Then I would write an article specifically for the purpose of promoting this site with appropriate links. This means no matter how many times the article gets copied you will not get any duplicated content issues and not be associated with "scraper sites"

2. Of course there are no hard and fast rules, some people have said they have reproduced their own articles without any adverse consequences. Also it may depend on your goals of writing articles. If it is really good article publishing it in more than one place may give you the benefit of having many people reading it. However I would be careful about doing this too much, especially since Google is likely to be working to devalue this SEO technique.

3. If you want to promote a site on "yoga exercises" make sure you write articles on a related theme. This might be general articles on yoga, meditation, personal well being e.t.c. Links will only be valued when they come from sites and articles with the keywords you want to promote.

4. Related to the above point is developments from Google. Google is working hard to stop "google bombing". Remember the days when "miserable failure" used to return a page on an American President? Now it is no longer does, Google is increasingly suspicious of links from unrelated pages. Thus if you link to your yoga site from an article on "Varieties of English Cheeses during the late medieval period of 1600-1700". Google will probably view your yoga links as "link spam". It is not inconceivable your site may get a bad reputation with Google if you do this too much.

5. Correct linking from your article. Usually ezines allow 1 or 2 links in your article to your own site. To get the most benefit from link I would suggest this:

a) link anchor text of a keyword you wish to promote "yoga exercises" or "guide to yoga"

b) It is also useful to have one link as the site URL make it a live link. This means even if other sites strip out html you will still have a link.

c) Vary links. Don't always use the same resource box. Google likes natural links. Change the anchor link text, link to different pages. Don't just link to the homepage. The key is variety.

d) Putting links in the main body of the article will reduce the chance of it being copied by other sites. However for some articles I will still add a link in middle of text because these are more valuable than links at bottom.

6. The key to success is to write an article that other website will want to copy this will give you the widest exposure and maximum number of links. Good articles are informative, simple and easy to read. They are not ego driven. Also don't make a blatant sales pitch in your article. As Christopher Knight of  says "You are aiming to promote your article not your site"

7. Make sure your title has good keywords. It should be at least 3-4 words and be descriptive of your article. If the keywords are good it will improve your chance of getting good Google ranking for the article. In turn this will increase the chance of it getting copied by other sites.

8. Do try to have a good quality article so that it gets copied by good quality websites. There is little if any benefit from it being copied by many of the scrapper sites. (sites which offer no unique content but just copy others and then add Google adsense)
